Engineering a world of possibilitiesColorado School of Mines is
seeking our next Director of Facilities & Aquatics to provide
leadership for the Student Recreation Center and satellite
Recreational Sports facilities. The position provides oversight for
special events and varsity competitions.
Now is a great time to join our growing department! By 2026, Mines
will have nearly doubled the size of our workout space and fitness
studios, including space in our new Residence Halls. The SRC
operates seven days a week with extended hours and numerous
facility reservations and activities.
The Director of Facilities & Aquatics provides vital flexibility in
the management and supervision of Rec. Sports\Athletics facilities,
staff, events and competitions. The Director of Facilities and
Aquatics will serve as an instructor and leader for the aquatics
staff. This position is also the first point of contact for
maintenance, construction and building upkeep. The Director of
Facilities and Aquatics will coordinate with many other campus
entities including but not limited to Structural Trades,
Electrical, HVAC, Access Services, Grounds, Events and Moving,
Plumbing, the Office of Design and Construction as well as other
internal and external partners and vendors. This position also
supports Rec. Sports operations by procuring the necessary supplies
and materials to keep buildings and equipment in good working
order.
This work is performed primarily on campus in Golden,
Colorado.Primary Responsibilities:Facilities:
- Support daily operations of comprehensive recreation facilities
ensuring safety, service, inclusiveness, collaboration and student
focus.
- Work closely and collaboratively with Facilities Management,
including but not limited to, event staff, electricians, HVAC,
structural trades, pool maintenance staff, custodial staff and
Environmental Health and Safety to ensure work orders, repairs and
maintenance are being completed in a timely and effective
manner.
- Serve as the liaison and point of contact between Rec. Sports
and the Office of Design and Construction when managing events,
special use permits and maintenance or construction projects
involving both departments.
- Provide daily supervision of the Student Recreation Center and
support the coordination of internal and external special events as
well as varsity competitions. This includes pre-event planning,
staffing, room scheduling, supervision and evaluation for:
- Varsity athletics practices, contests, and summer camps
- Recreational Sports contests
- Colorado School of Mines campus-wide events including, but not
limited to:
- Career Day
- Commencement
- Convocation
- Presidents Lecture Series
- Foundation/Alumni Functions/Admissions
- External Rentals
- Work to coordinate the scheduling for reservable spaces within
Rec. Sports managed facilities.
- Communicate all room setup\tear down, work orders and custodial
needs to the appropriate personnel.
- Meet established revenue target sources for auxiliary
revenue.Management
- Review, develop and implement policies and procedures for
facilities, programs and services that are consistent with
university policy, Division of Student Life practices and
procedures, and NIRSA guidelines.
- Provides input to the annual budget of the SRC. This position
may be assigned specific components of the budget especially as it
relates to membership fees, revenue from facility rentals, student
staffing and facility maintenance.
- In collaboration with the rest of the Rec Sports staff, develop
and implement a comprehensive marketing plan for Rec. Sports
including but not limited to website, digital displays, print
media, social media, and radio station content.
- Provides leadership and assistance when hiring, training,
scheduling, evaluation, discipline and payroll of approximately 60
student employees.
- Plan, implement and regularly revise facility policies and
procedures including but not limited to the MOU, membership
policies, aquatic policies and the emergency action plan for Rec.
Sports facilities.
- Lead the purchasing process through researching equipment and
services, developing RFPs, generating price comparisons and
compiling patron feedback regarding various pieces of equipment,
vendors and supplies for the facilities. Purchase, manage and
inventory supplies and materials for the department.
- Collect, compile and report on various facility information.
Including but not limited to facility usage, patron experience,
student staff satisfaction etc.
- The position will work a flexible schedule, early morning, late
nights and weekends will be necessary at times. This position
should be able to response to facility or risk management
emergencies whenever possible.Aquatics:
- Support efforts to recruit, train, and supervise
lifeguards.
- Create and enforce pool policies, respond to pool-related
patron requests or complaints and manage pool facility issues.
- Advise and coordinate pool scheduling with multiple pool user
groups including but not limited to varsity sports, club sports,
fitness, student organizations, internal and external rentals.
- Purchase or recommend aquatics equipment as needed.
- Plan, schedule and instruct CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard
trainings for department staff as well as internal and external
user groups.
- Coordinate and supervise pool and spa operations, water
testing, maintenance and risk management issuesMembership
Management:
- Oversee the membership services.
- Oversee the membership management software. This includes
purchasing, implementation, daily operations, reporting/record
keeping, training, technical support and evaluation. This
encompasses member management, equipment checkout and retail
sales.
- Responsible for accurately managing inventory for rental
equipment and possibly retail sales.
- Evaluates membership recruitment, retention and facility usage,
and makes recommendations for changes as appropriate to the
Director of Recreational Sports/Assistant Athletic Director.
- Administers membership finances including billing, deposits,
fee changes, reconciling as it relates to batching, past due
payments, balances, cancellations, and customer concerns.
- Provide assistance with daily deposits.Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports
Management, Event Management, or a related field
- Progressive professional experience in recreational
sports/intercollegiate athletics
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED/Lifeguard certifications, or obtain
within one month of hire
- Position requires expertise in implementing recreational sports
programs, strong leadership abilities, skills in managing conflict,
skills in training and leading professional and student staff, and
a demonstrated experience to managing a recreational sports
facility
- Demonstrated knowledge of student development in higher
education
- The successful candidate must possess excellent written, oral
and interpersonal skills; and computer proficiency
- Good judgment and decision-making abilities
- Strong conflict resolution and customer service skills
- Ability to function in a fast paced environment and adapt
quickly to changing prioritiesPreferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Sport Management, Recreation, Physical
Education or related field
- Active NIRSA Member
- Current Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Trainer
certification (Lifeguard Instructor Trainer), or ability to obtain
within 12 months of hire
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification or ability to
obtain within 3 months of hire
- Successful purchasing experience in analyzing products and
services as well as developing RFPs
- Previous fiscal and management experience with multi-functional
facilities.
- Proficient in the use of the following software applications:
SubItUp, Fusion, EMS Scheduling, Neptune Radio, Microsoft Office
Professional, Banner, Area Access Manager, Ocularis, CRS Contract
System, SideArm Sports, Google Products, FAMIS
- Previous shared facility scheduling and event management
experience.
- Previous experience working with collegiate athletics
- Previous experience developing, revising and evaluating
policies and procedures for a shared use recreational
sports/athletics facility
- Previous experience marketing recreational sports programs and
services
- Experience supervising student employees
